Nature is turning.
I'm a systems scientist, mathematician, and philosopher. For forty years I've studied one thing under many names — the structure hidden inside complex systems, and the discipline of acting well when the record you're given is faithful but never the whole. That question runs through markets, through the study of cycles, and down into measurement itself. I chair the Foundation for the Study of Cycles, and I spent two decades in the markets learning the difference between the theory of uncertainty and the lived reality of it.
Complex numbers carry a "real" part and an "imaginary" part, and we teach them as if one is solid and the other a fiction. It's backwards. There is one thing here — a rotation — and "real" and "imaginary" are only its two shadows, cast onto whichever axis you happen to stand on. Step ninety degrees and the shadows trade places. Nothing about the rotation changed; only where you stood did. Every measurement is a shadow like this: faithful, and never the whole.

The work, in one line
Every measurement is a projection — faithful, but lossy. It hands you a record and hides the structure the record came from. Most of the trouble in markets, in science, and in how we're now building technology comes from one mistake: treating the projection as if it were the whole. The work I care about is the opposite discipline — facing what's hidden, refusing the shortcut, and recovering the structure the honest way.

My research program explores complex geometry as the new complexity science — the claim that the turning geometry behind cycle phenomena is not a modeling convenience but the structure the measurements were pointing at all along. More on the program →
